Learning Objectives: Course Description, Objectives, and student learning outcomes: REA 0019 - Modularized Developmental Reading: This course is designed to develop basic reading skills necessary for success in college-level courses. REA0019 is a self-paced course whereby students work on their own in the textbooks as well as on the computer. A diagnostic given at the start of the semester determines each student’s individual study plan. In order to pass the course, students must complete all assigned work. Topics include the following: • main idea, supporting, details, purpose and tone of the author • fact and opinion, organizational patterns, relationships, • vocabulary in context, inference and conclusions, • reasoning and argument. • Credit is not applicable toward A. A. or A.S. degrees. This course may not be repeated. However, students who earn a grade of “D.” or “F.” will be allowed to enroll in REA 0019A to complete their developmental reading sequence. Students may access course performance standards by going to “Course Performances Standards” at scf.edu/Academ/Academ.cfm. A hard copy may be obtained from instructor or Department.
Required Materials: Course Materials: • Textbook: Ten Steps to Advancing College Reading Skills, 6th edition, by John Langan o ISBN: 9781591944836 • Textbook: Advancing Vocabulary Skills, 5th edition, by Sherrie Nist o ISBN: 9781591945338 • You will need online access to Townsend Press. The professor will guide you through this simple process. • Be sure to keep the disc (access code key) that is shrink wrapped with your Ten Steps textbook.
Technical Requirements: Course Requirements: In order to successfully complete REA 0019, students must fulfill ALL of the following: attend class regularly, participate in class discussions, and complete designated assignments. Assignments/Grades/Attendance: • Students are required to be on time (2 tardies/early leaves =1 absence), attend all classes, and complete ALL assignments, which may be submitted early. • Students who miss more than two class sessions may be withdrawn with a grade of “W” or” WF.” • Grading: Alternate Mastery Tests 70%; Vocabulary Tests 20 %; Final Exam, 10%. • Grading Scale: A- to A+ = 90-100; B- to B+ = 80-89; C- to C+ = 70-79; D- to D+ = 60-69; 0-59 = F. • Students must have an overall an overall 70% or higher REA 0019 gpa in order to take the Final Exit Exam. • Students must have a score of 70% or higher on the final exam to pass the course
