Learning Objectives: The course is meant to engage students with formal, research writing. Inherent in the process are critical reading, research, drafting, and revising skills. The specific outcomes of this course are outlined in detail at: http://scf.edu/Academics/LanguageLiterature/LanguageandLiteratureCoursePerformanceStandards.asp Course assignments and activities are designed around these objectives. • Fulfill writing requirements as mandated by SBE 6A-10.30, also known as the Gordon Rule. • Draft, edit, and produce well-organized, multi-paragraph essays with grammar, style, and tone appropriate for the college level. • Conduct research using valid resources including print, database, and web-based sources. • Write a multi-paragraph, thesis-driven, properly documented research essay while avoiding plagiarism by using an approved documentation style. • Effectively apply the skills necessary for in-class, timed writing assignments. • Effectively deliver a presentation. • Apply effective interpersonal communication skills by participating in collaborative projects, research, and peer review. • Apply current digital literacy skills through the professional use of email, online forums, and other forms of technology. • Apply college-level analytical and evaluative reading skills to course assignments
Required Materials: Required Texts • There is no textbook for the course. • Digital readings will be posted in Canvas. Readings will link to the SCF Library*, Google Books an and websites with open domain resources *To access digital books and articles in the SCF library, the user name = G00 number (with the G included) and the password = last four digits of your G00 number
Technical Requirements: Technology Requirements • The course will require access to a reliable computer and reliable online access (all State College of Florida campuses have computer labs for student use—including the library & the ARC). • You can use Google Docs, Word, Pages (I have a Mac). • As a SCF student, you can download a free version of Office 365. Log in to My SCF, Help tab, Microsoft 365 You will need a method with which to take notes (select the method that seems natural) • Purchase an inexpensive printer, paper, and extra cartridge and take notes directly on the readings • Online: "print" readings as a PDF and take notes using either Adobe or take notes using a note-taking app. There are several options, search Google or YouTube for digital note-taking • Use an "old school" pen and paper method, using the Cornell note-taking method
