Learning Objectives: Course Description: (3) (A.A.) No prerequisite musical skills or knowledge are required. This course meets Area IV requirements for the A.A./A.A.S./A.S. general education requirements and part of the six-hour International/Intercultural requirement. This course is an aural/lecture survey of music, composition and technique from antiquity to the present, emphasizing the historical, political, cultural and scientific values that have shaped world music. Purpose: 1. To develop an aural concept of major styles of music in music history through the study of selected compositions; 2. To develop an interest in and appreciation of music through exposure to representative masterworks; 3. To develop and awareness of the role music plays in our culture; and, 4. To develop and elementary concept of the components of music: i.e., pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics, texture and form. Performance Standards: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Relate the developments of music history with the concurrent developments of cultural history. 2. Aurally recognize distinguishing features of the major style periods of Western art music. 3. Classify orchestral and non-orchestral musical instruments. 4. Explain the basic organization of music through the elements of pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics, texture and form. 5. Define basic musical terms. 6. Explain the contributions of major composers and identify their musical styles. 7. Exhibit active listening, demonstrated by distinguishing such aspects as texture, mood and meter. 8. Show how various forms of art express similar aesthetical ideals. 9. Point out key characteristics of each stylistic period.
Required Materials: 1. Participants will be expected to obtain regular access to the textbook (Experience Music! Fourth edition, Katherine Charlton, McGraw Hill) and purchase the online registration code which accompanies the textbook. The CDs are optional since the music is online. 2. Additional resources can be found on the “Online Learning Center” at www.mhhe.com/charltonexperience2e 3. The course will generally follow the order of the materials as presented in the textbook. Any changes in that order will be announced at the beginning of the semester. 4. Compositions will be chosen from each chapter to be studied as models for developing an aural concept of major styles in music history. Students are expected to listen and evaluate the assigned compositions. 5. Students will also attend at least two live musical concerts during the term. One of chosen from Classical, Broadway or Jazz genres and one of their choice.
